Miracle of Light: Hanukkah

The place name ‘Isaac’s Beacons’ reminds us that every year Jews keep a festival of light, from an era of darkness when there was no open vision. The word Hanukka is from the word חנך “to dedicate”.

The Walls on the Mountains of Israel

When we speak of our trust in the prophecy of the Bible, we have as evidence from history that shows a literal and detailed fulfilment.

When speaking of the walls of Tyre, we were told,

And they shall destroy the walls of Tyrus, and break down her towers: I will also scrape her dust from her, and make her like the top of a rock. (Ezekiel 26:4)

This fate may be verified.

Then too for over 100 years despite two world wars and the dramatic creation of the ‘Iron Curtain’ wall we maintained that Europe must unite. It is curious that Europe uniting was most unlikely from 1961 as a physical barrier was built in Berlin, which was improved and further fortified until 1980. Even the day before the dramatic fall of the wall, no-one could have predicted the race to European unity that has occurred since.

This is a one and half minute video about another wall. Like the Berlin wall this wall also is a flashpoint for world war.

Video_WallsOnMountainsOfIsarel

After years of lectures on Ezekiel 38, speaking of Israel at the time of the latter days before Messiah’s coming dwelling without walls, bars and gates, instead of peace as we expected, and which might have been achieved at a few points, we see what seems the opposite. Until we think about it. Most of the world sees only physical reality, we see with the eye of faith. How could Ezekiel have so confidently written of walls, bars and gates being associated specifically with Israel’s mountains? It was only after 1994 that we could see what he was talking about, and why Gog was so amazed about them being removed that he comments on it as a reason for his actions!

Miracle?: Two Olive Trees in Israel

If there is only one witness, who may believe? If there is two who are reliable then a matter may be established. Zechariah saw two olive trees, to stand by the Lord in all the earth. For 2,000 years two persecuted minorities have carried with them the Word of God containing the Promises, and held it precious, and both have been sent to every nation on earth.

Thou Worm Jacob

The committee were discussing yesterday evening the amazing stuxnet ‘worm’ which affected Iran’s nuclear program, which is estimated to have begun to work in June 2010. Then we noticed it was in our readings for the day of June 17, and we wondered if there was a connection.

Communication

Doors may open and opportunities may present themselves, but of great value are the small actions and communications.

But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased. (Hebrews 13:16)

The committee of this project was given two communications of great value on one day. A sister wrote to us, “This must be exciting, and I wish you and the committee encouragement and success as you “rise up and build”.”

A brother though told as yet we had not the target level of support to begin, would take no refusal for a donation he gave to us, saying that he donated for those who might not give, and the flyer was asking so little. If there are only 10,000 such it could be begun tomorrow!

What is an Ensign?

Isaiah spoke eight times of God lifting up an ensign. From this we might gather what it means.

The first reference was against Jerusalem & Judah (Isaiah 5:26). They were God’s unproductive “vineyard”, of which he said he would remove the “hedge” & “fence” which seems equated to raise an ensign to the nations that they came swiftly, to carry them away to captivity.
The second reference (Isaiah 13:2) further explains this ensign as at that time Isaiah speaks in a prophecy about Babylon, and at that time the command goes out to lift up the ensign spoken of in chapter 5.

The third reference has two ensigns (Isaiah 11:10-12) , but they are the same. In the first instance the “root of Jesse” stands for the ensign, in the second the ensign is set up by God to gather the dispersed of Israel.

The fourth instance, shows the ensign to be put on the mountains as one the ambassadors of the nations should heed,

All ye inhabitants of the world, and ye dwellers on the earth, when an ensign is lifted up on the mountains, see ye; and when the horn is blown, hear ye. For thus hath the LORD said unto me: I will hold Me still, and I will look on in My dwelling-place, like clear heat in sunshine, like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest. (Isaiah 18:3-4)

This event seems to occur before God looks on his dwelling place. It makes sense that this ensign and blowing is at the return of Jesus.

The fifth instance a remnant of Judah is described as a lone beacon and ensign on a hill (Isaiah 30:17).

The sixth instance (Isaiah 31:9) is when Jews are asked to turn to the Holy One, in the day people cast away their idols (when the earth is shaken) and the princes of Assyria are dismayed by the ensign, which is associated with the fire of Zion and the furnace of Jerusalem.

The seventh instance the LORD God says he will lift up his hand to the nations and that is equated to being an ensign to the peoples (Isaiah 49:22). The hand is lifted up to bring the sons and daughters of Zion to him.

The last and 8th instance is most powerful as it indicates that we are to do something – not just watch.

I have set watchmen upon thy walls, O Jerusalem, they shall never hold their peace day nor night: ‘Ye that are the LORD’S remembrancers, take ye no rest, And give Him no rest, till He establish, and till He make Jerusalem a praise in the earth.’ The LORD hath sworn by His right hand, and by the arm of His strength: Surely I will no more give thy corn to be food for thine enemies; and strangers shall not drink thy wine, for which thou hast laboured; But they that have garnered it shall eat it, and praise the LORD, and they that have gathered it shall drink it in the courts of My sanctuary.
Go through, go through the gates, clear ye the way of the people; cast up, cast up the highway, gather out the stones; lift up an ensign over the peoples. Behold, the LORD hath proclaimed unto the end of the earth: say ye to the daughter of Zion: ‘Behold, thy salvation cometh; behold, His reward is with Him, and His recompense before Him.’ (Isaiah 62:6-11)

In this passage there are the watchmen who do not rest, but then presumably, when the time is right, people are to work hard clearing a highway, even to remove stones (perhaps of stumbling), and the ensign is to proclaim and prepare a way, speaking of the coming of the salvation. This is an ensign of another ensign to come.

For when the root of Jesse comes then he stands for the ensign which is the hand of God. And he gathers the natural daughters and sons of Zion to him from all the world.

An ensign in each instance speaks of gathering the people. But the idea of ensign in Hebrew also speaks of miracle.

Thou hast given a banner to them that fear thee, that it may be displayed because of the truth. Selah. (Psalm 60:4)

The Introductory Video

The gospel was preached before to Abraham saying, “in thee all nations will be blessed” (Gal 3:8). This gospel is our salvation and the same one we preach, for there is no other gospel. We are told

“Thou hast given an ensign (Hebrew: nes) to them that fear thee, that it may be displayed because of the truth.” (Psa 60:4).

There is an imperative implied in the words of Isaiah lift up an ensign over the peoples.

Behold, the LORD hath proclaimed unto the end of the earth: say ye to the daughter of Zion: ‘Behold, thy salvation comes; behold, His reward is with Him, and His recompense before Him.’ (Isaiah 62:6-11)

If the nations wish to deny the prophets and revile God’s witnesses, who will stand by the Jews who believe the words of the Prophets as precious, to encourage them? We know from the scriptures that as a witness to us, and the nations, they being gathered, as Ezekiel wrote to be one nation on the mountains of Israel

Does God need Christadelphians to fulfil Bible prophecy for him?

Correspondence was received which raised this question. The answer from the scriptures is direct. When the leaders of the people asked Jesus to rebuke his disciples when he and they were fulfilling Zecharaiah’s prophecy, that the king would come riding upon a donkey (Matt. 21:4)

..he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out. (Luke 19:40)

If we are of no use to God, others hands will do the work required.

The evil who know not God will even fulfil his will, often because they don’t know the Bible. We are told that Europe will be obedient to God’s will, though they might hate God.

For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled. (Rev 17:17)

We might rather seek to be like King David, of whom we are told,

He raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said, ‘I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will.’ (Acts 13:22)

Christadelphians because they knew and loved the Bible were once given a great privilege in helping found Rosh Pinna (Head of the Corner) in modern Israel. The Jews even gave their work a name we would agree with (Matt. 21:42). There seems evidence our preaching had greater effect than our numbers might indicate.

If planting for the First Aliyah was important so was WW1 and the actions of Winston Churchill and Lord Balfour. Both it seems had sustained contact with Christadelphians. Churchill with Sydney Butler of the Redditch Ecclesia who as a young man was his chauffeur while at the Admiralty. It seems Balfour had at least 2 contacts, in a Nanny as a child by which he might have obtained Elpis Israel and he was sent a copy of ‘Nazareth Revisited’ in the early 1890’s, which it seems he valued. In addition if this was not enough at a critical time in history Gilbert Smith a member of Acocks Green served Sir Anthony Eden, and Joe Thomas of Llanelly served Lloyd George who was to become PM.

Then when the global power shifted to US a Catholic President was assassinated in a case still unsolved, and L.B. Johnson who had very strong Christadelphian connections was given power just before the events of 1967 when Israel captured Jerusalem.

More recently in 2003 Stephen Snobelen made a choice about a Isaac Newton manuscript and was given world exposure to explain Bible prophecy  (see here).

For a people who don’t register in census, Christadelphians seem to appear at crucial moments influencing world events. Now is another crucial moment. Is our light shining?
